Today is the second day of 2018 and it has been a day since 2017 was laid to rest. Like in every other year 2017 saw it's a fair share of birth and death of technologies. Here is a list of technologies that died in 2017


1. 3D Television



A few years ago 3D was among the most exciting upcoming technology. 3D Television is television that conveys depth perception to the viewer by employing techniques such as stereoscopic display, multi-view display, 2D plus-depth, 2D-plus-depth, or any form of 3D display. Major TV companies like Samsung, LG, Sharp, TCL and Sony have ceased support for 3D TVs. Thus 3D TV technology was buried in 2017.

2. iPod Shuffle

The iPod shuffle which was launched in 2005 completely revolutionized the pocket music player industry. It was the first music player to incorporate a flash memory. The last fourth generation model was introduced on September 1st 2010. Apple discontinued the model on 27th July 2017.

3. Windows Phone

Windows phone was first launched in October 2010 with Windows Phone 7 being the first model. On 8th October 2017 Microsoft's Senior executive Joe Belfiore announced that Microsoft will be discontinuing the manufacturing of new Windows phone models and will also no longer provide OS updates. He confirmed that existing users will continue to receive bug fixes and security updates.

4.  Microsoft Kinnect

Microsoft features for the second time in our list with the Microsoft Kinnect. The Kinnect was a motion-sensing device to be used for Xbox consoles and Windows PC. The Kinnect was first introduced in November 2010 and after the initial success, it didn't take off. It was finally canned by Microsoft in October 2017.

5. Google Tango

Tango was one of Google's most ambitious plans. It aimed to reinvent smartphone cameras to allow app developers to create Augmented Reality(AR) apps. With Pokemon Go bringing AR games to the mainstream in 2016, it was expected that AR will open a new dimension for app developers. It came as a surprise for most when Google decided to discontinue Tango in December 2017.
